Definition
Shared Ownership terms differ by nation, scheme and lease. In England, buyers normally purchase an eligible share from a provider and can often buy more later through staircasing. Rent, service charges, repairs, resale restrictions and mortgage requirements continue alongside the purchased share.
Practical example
The mortgage and deposit are based on the share being purchased, while affordability also includes rent and service charges.
Why it matters
Compare the full monthly and long-term cost, not only the smaller initial mortgage.
